FeatureScript: turning design rules into reusable features
From repeated clicks to explicit rules: how Onshape makes custom features part of parametric modeling.
Mechanical design includes many rules that can be expressed explicitly: hole patterns, mounting interfaces, standard profiles and structures controlled by a few parameters. Capturing these rules as reusable features can reduce repetitive work.
A language designed around parametric models
Onshape describes FeatureScript as a language designed to create and manipulate 3D parametric models. Standard Onshape features, including extrudes, fillets and helices, are also implemented as FeatureScript functions.
Users can create custom features in a Feature Studio and use them during modeling. This connects geometric operations, input parameters and the user interface.
What this means for engineering teams
Teams can define inputs, constraints and outputs around recurring design tasks. A good custom feature should explain where it applies and return understandable feedback when inputs do not meet its requirements.
When rules change, teams also need to consider versions, references and how existing models regenerate.
Where AI fits
AI can help interpret requirements and draft code, while clearly structured custom features can serve as execution tools. Practical use requires validation with boundary inputs, representative models and rebuilds after updates.
